Outdoor Summer Jobs Open for 16- to 24-year-olds

The Sonoma County Youth Ecology Corps (SCYEC) is taking applications through May 22 for its eight-week, summer job program for 16- to 24-year-olds. 

Forty youth will be hired to work outside from June 17-August 8 on environmental and land conservation projects throughout the county. Pay is $13.80 per hour. Youth will also receive career and environmental education and job training, plus enjoy fun events with other workers. As one crew member said, “It’s a great gateway into getting a job and succeeding in life.” 

“The SCYEC offers young people with little or no work experience a paycheck, new job skills and new friends,” said Sonoma County Human Services Department Director Karen Fies. “The work can be physically hard, but workers like improving our local community while getting paid.”

Crews will complete the physical work that helps prevent flood damage and restore local creeks and streams. They’ll clear invasive plants, improve trails in local parks and support community garden projects. “My favorite part is when the whole crew works as a team and encourages each other to get the job done,” said a former SCYEC worker.

The Human Services Department Employment and Training Division partners with the Workforce Investment Board, the Sonoma County Water Agency, the Sonoma County Office of Education and New Ways to Work on this annual youth job program.

Five community-based youth agencies will employ and supervise the work crews: The Center for Social and Environmental Stewardship, Conservation Corps North Bay, Petaluma People Services Center, Social Advocates for Youth and West County Community Services.
