Sonoma County officials warn of high wildfire risk for 2025 fire season
Sonoma County officials and partner agencies today urged residents to prepare for what may be a high-risk wildfire season this year. During a wildfire preparedness update before the Board of Supervisors, officials, including emergency managers and fire chiefs, highlighted local multi-agency efforts to reduce wildfire risk, enhance emergency coordination, and support community readiness as the county prepares for a 2025 fire season that is expected to bring high fuel loads and unfavorable weather conditions. EPIC Campaign aims to raise awareness about Russian River pollution
Beginning June 6, visitors to the Guerneville area will encounter some interesting images of creek and river creatures clutching litter and other recyclable items. The images will be displayed on storefronts and walkways along Main Street. These installations, part of Sonoma County’s EPIC Campaign, follow similar public art projects in Santa Rosa’s Sebastopol Avenue, Shiloh Shopping Center in Windsor, and the downtown districts of Healdsburg, Cloverdale and Ukiah. Sonoma County to host June 12 public meeting on Airport Area Specific Plan update
Permit Sonoma will host a scoping meeting for the Airport Area Specific Plan update environmental impact report on June 12 to solicit public feedback on the scope of the proposed environmental review. The Airport Area Specific Plan addresses land use, circulation, design standards and infrastructure planning to guide the growth within the area around the Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport. Sonoma County District Attorney Announces Results of Third Annual Compliance Report from PG&E Independent Monitor
Sonoma County District Attorney Carla Rodriguez announced today that the Independent Monitor held its third annual meeting this Wednesday, and released its Third Annual Compliance Report, related to its oversight of the Pacific Gas & Electric Company (“PG&E”). The Independent Monitor, Filsinger Energy Partners, was appointed in April 2022 to monitor PG&E’s compliance with various safety measures imposed upon the company by a Stipulated Judgment between the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office and PG&E and ordered by Sonoma County Superior Court Judge Patrick Broderick on April 8, 2022, related to the 2019 Kincade Fire. Sonoma County to offer Community Emergency Response Team trainings
The public is invited to join a unique team of volunteers who have received advanced training, free of charge, to help their families, neighborhoods and communities prepare for and respond to wildfires and other disasters. The Sonoma County Department of Emergency Management has several upcoming trainings for the Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT. A nationally respected training program, CERT is the focus of the department’s attempt at engaging Sonoma County residents in disaster preparedness. Read full story
Seasonal inflation of Russian River rubber dam to begin near Forestville
Sonoma County Water Agency (Sonoma Water) will begin the multi-day process of inflating its rubber dam located in the Russian River near Forestville on Thursday, May 29. The rubber dam is a critical component of the Russian River water supply system that provides naturally filtered drinking water to more than 600,000 residents in portions of Sonoma and Marin counties. Sonoma County Board of Supervisors approves Russian River floodplain restoration project
On Earth Day, April 22, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors adopted a use permit and associated General Plan and zoning amendments to launch a 358-acre Russian River floodplain restoration project along the east bank of the Russian River near Windsor. The project will restore and regrade four former gravel mining pits, known locally as the “Hanson Pits.” This restoration will create functional floodplain habitat for federally listed salmonids, improve water quality, and provide low-impact public amenities including day-use parking, a multi-use trail, and a small boat-in/walk-in campground.
