Sonoma County extends Residential  Chipping Program to reduce wildfire risk

Sonoma County has extended its free Residential Chipper Program for 2020 to reduce the risk for spread of wildfires. The expansion of the program is the result of a Board of Supervisors decision to increase funding for vegetation management in Sonoma County.  

The Chipper Program, administered by the Permit Sonoma Fire Prevention Division, is set up to encourage residents to create defensible space around their homes and to reduce vegetation along access routes. Properties in unincorporated Sonoma County are eligible to receive up to two hours of complimentary chipping. On average, this is enough time to chip a pile of vegetation that is approximately 50 feet long, three feet high, and eight feet wide. The expended program slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis until full.  

In the event of a wildfire, having 100 feet or more of defensible space has been clearly demonstrated to help save homes. Likewise, thinning vegetation on access roads can make it safer for residents and firefighters.  

So far this year the program has served more than 700 properties. Residents served span Sonoma County from Cloverdale to the north, to Sonoma in the south and from Kenwood on the eastern side of the County to Jenner on the coast.
