Nancy Padian
Nancy Padian is an internationally-recognized leader in reproductive health epidemiology. She is retired from the faculty of the University of California where she taught and conducted research for more than four decades including nine years as a Senior Technical Advisor, Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator (President's Emergency Plan For AIDS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Her work bridges traditional infectious disease epidemiology, reproductive health and health systems research. She has led numerous initiatives dedicated to improving the health status of women and girls around the world by conducting research on HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, gender and economic inequities, and contraceptive technologies. Most recently, her research was focused in Southern Africa (Zambia, Zambia and South Africa) and was directed towards innovative community-based, health-systems approaches to increase demand and supply for HIV-related methods of prevention and treatment as well as contraception.
She is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Epidemiology and a frequent consultant for the United Nations, the World Bank, the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health. She has served on the editorial board of seven international journals and has authored over 250 peer-review published articles and book chapters. She currently serves on the Boards of the Glen Ellen Forum and the Sonoma Ecologic Center. She loves non-human mammals and birds in addition to cooking, working out and reading.
