Rio Nido Culverts Installation
What’s Happening?
After the 2019 winter storms caused major flooding and damage, the County launched the Rio Nido Culverts Installation Project. The project will install new storm drains along Bay Avenue and across Hay Lane, redirecting runoff into an existing concrete-lined channel.
How We Got Here
Past flooding events damaged roads, homes, and public infrastructure, sometimes cutting off access for residents and emergency services. The new storm drains are designed to protect the community and prevent future damage.
Why It Matters
- Prevents road closures and protects private property from storm damage.
- Keeps residents and emergency responders connected, even during severe storms.
- Strengthens Rio Nido’s resilience to future weather events.
What’s Next
- Engineering report and survey completed by EBA Engineering.
- Coordination underway with Sweet Water Springs Water District to relocate a waterline.
- Permits obtained/underway: waiver from the Regional Water Quality Control Board, coordination with CA Department of Fish & Wildlife, and work with Permit Sonoma.
- Some drainage easements will be needed from property owners.
Timeline (as of late 2022)
- Engineering design and surveys → Complete.
- Utility coordination and permits → In progress.
- Bid package → Targeted for completion after permitting.
- Construction → Anticipated following permitting and easements.
